Mom’s House celebrates 20 years helping single moms

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Mom's House of Toledo recognized founder Nancy Nudo Friday at their 20th anniversary gala.

Nudo says the past 20 years wouldn't have been possible without the volunteers and supporters who dedicated their time to make a difference.

Mom's House is a local non-profit that helps single moms with daycare services as they receive their education. Nudo says she first came across the organization in Pittsburgh.

"I was just overwhelmed because I thought it was such a great program – for the girls and for the babies and for education," she said. "I just thought the whole thing was dynamite."

At Friday's celebration, Nudo was honored as "Mom of the Year."

"I think I'm more nervous than the day I got married, and that was 45 years ago," she said. "It really is an honor."

Another woman honored was 20-year-old Janelle Reed-Lewis, a UT student and basketball player who received the President's Award. Reed-Lewis has taken full custody of her 16-year-old brother because their mother works two jobs and is rarely home. She says she's only doing what's right.

"I don't look at this as if it's something big, because, I mean, he's my brother," she said. "He needed help, so I was here to support him 100 percent."
