Great Lakes Museum gets poetic touch

A poem stamp for the sidewalk. A poem stamp for the sidewalk.
(Toledo News Now) -

The Arts Commission is ‘putting its stamp' on the National Great Lakes Museum, by way of a public art project.

Words of five poems written by local writers are being stamped into some freshly-poured sidewalks at the outdoor public park under construction. The poems were selected through a contest hosted by the Arts Commission.

The goal is to enhance the public gathering spot, and to hopefully inspire some people as they visit the park in the future. A ribbon-cutting for that park is expected sometime in June.

"This site is gorgeous. It's really great," said Nathan Mattimoe with the Arts Commission. "I think adding that intimate interest of these poems on these sidewalks is a cool thing."

"The beauty of the park is going to lend itself well for groups to come down and utilize the park for different functions, or people just coming down with brown bags and have lunch right here on the riverfront," said Anna Kolin with the Great Lakes Historical Society.

A public reception for the poetic sidewalk project is scheduled for May 23.
