Washington Twp. Fire Department awarded $25K grant

The Washington Township Fire Department has received a $25,000 grant for assistance. It is money fire officials say is desperately needed.

The department applied for the Assistant to Firefighters Grant last year. On Friday morning, it received approval from the federal government to receive the grant, which will allow the department to get items it might not have been able to afford with normal funding.

The money will be put towards replacing an air compressor, which is used to fill air bottles the firefighters use to breathe when fighting fires. The compressor the department has now is almost 30 years old.

Fire officials say this money will be well spent replacing it.

"When they go into a building the air is super heated. There are dangerous toxic gases, so the air supply is one of the most vital things to a firefighter," explained Assistant Chief William Dawn.

The new compressor will cost about $25,000, using the entire grant. Dawn says the department should get it in just a few weeks.
