City-owned property may violate Toledo’s tall grass policy

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

John Bibish unsuccessfully fought long and hard to keep the Toledo Police Northwest Station on Sylvania Avenue open.

But now, folks living in surrounding houses with neatly-manicured lawns are dealing with overgrown grass on the city-owned property, and even gang graffiti on a sign there.

"Despite the fact that there's money in the budget for maintenance and repair, and in addition to that, a budget specifically for the Northwest Station, it sure doesn't seem like anything's being done," Bibish said.

The problem? Toledo has a tall grass policy. Grass and weeds higher than eight inches will be cut by city crews, and the property owner charged for the work.

Bibish thinks the overgrown grass at the station is a blatant double-standard by the city.

"I think that if this is city property, it should be treated as anything under their stewardship should be, and that's appropriately," he said. "It should be cut like all grass around the surrounding properties."

Bibish continues his fight to re-open the station. The current neglect gets him even more fired up.

"The neighborhood will be a safer neighborhood, a better neighborhood, a spur for economic development in west Toledo with a stronger police presence," he said.

A call by Toledo News Now to the Bell Administration about the tall grass went unanswered.
