Red light cameras in question for Northwood

NORTHWOOD, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Automated photo and red light cameras in Northwood could soon be gone. It all depends on the decision city council makes Thursday at their meeting.

There are mixed feelings from drivers on whether to keep or get rid of the enforcement cameras.

"On one hand, it keeps things under control," said driver Robert Shaw. "But on the other, who wants to get nabbed by them?"

In 2005, city council approved their first contract with Redflex Traffic Systems to install and operate the cameras at two intersections. Their current contract expired in April.

"It's in council's hands," said Police Chief Thomas Cairl. "They have to approve all contracts for the city, and this, basically…is a tool in my toolbox."

The cameras are an extra set of eyes for the police department, and the chief is hoping they stay. He says they've made traffic flow safer.

"On Oregon and Wales, back before we set the cameras up, we had 33 accidents," Cairl said. "Last year, we only had nine. So that's a significant drop."

Council will make a decision at their meeting Thursday night. If the contract is not renewed, the cameras will be taken down immediately.
