TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Forest Cemetery, Toledo's oldest municipal cemetery, is undergoing a $250,000 expansion project.

The city is using 12 acres of land at the former Mulberry Park for the project. Money will be spent on drainage, fencing, lighting and roadwork. Crews have already begun regrading the land.

Denny Garvin, commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, says this is expected to give the city 25 years of additional use of the cemetery, plus give clients flexibility for planning.

"Gives us an opportunity to allow families to buy plots for their entire family, instead of wherever we can find room. It'll be nice to have that option again for the first time in decades," explains Garvin.

The city did remove some playground equipment for the expansion project, but in return, the city has converted vacant lots into "The Kids Spot," a new park located next to Spring Elementary School.
