Voters discontinue two levies for Elmwood Schools

(Toledo News Now) -

Voters turned down two leviesfor Elmwood Schools Tuesday.

School Superintendent TonyBurton says they can't function without the $1.5 million the levy would havegenerated, or 13 percent of the district's annual operating budget.

The income tax levies weren'tnew – they've been around since the 1990s, but voters in the five towns Elmwoodstudents come from decided against continuing them.

The district just received anexcellent rating on their state report card, but Burton warns if people decideto stop supporting the schools, that rating could disappear.

"A million and a half dollarsin cuts – that's a lot of staff, a lot of bussing, a lot of sports," he said. "Wehave to make decisions on what we can do without if the money is not renewed."

Burton recommends putting thelevy back on the ballot, but this time, allowing voters the option of renewingit every five years.
