Anthony Wayne schools get new security feature

WHITEHOUSE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Anthony Wayne Local School District has implemented a new audio buzzer entry system in an effort to keep students safe.

The district reviewed their security measures over the past three years, and decided a new audio buzzer entry system was needed at all Anthony Wayne schools.

"When individuals during the school day come to the front entrance of our six buildings, they have to hit the buzzer system," explained Superintendent Dr. Jim Fritz.

An image of the visitor then appears in the main office, and they are asked a series of questions before being let in.

The district already has security cameras around each school, but the buzzer system is an added feature.

"Obviously we want those that have a legitimate reason to be in our school buildings to have access," Fritz said. "This is just another way we can prevent issues from happening in our schools."

The system is equipped with a camera that records all visitor interactions. It cost the district $30,000, but Fritz says it's money well spent.

"This was another way we could improve our security in our buildings," he said. "So, obviously that money is worth it."

Staff members have special keys that give them access to the buildings, so they don't need to buzz in every day.

The system was installed Monday, and school personnel have been instructing students on the proper use of the system.
