Another roundabout planned for Sylvania Twp

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Lucas County motorists will soon see another roundabout in the area.

Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to move forward with the project, just southwest of the intersection of Sylvania-Metamora and Mitchaw Roads in Sylvania Township.

Several people spoke during the county commissioners meeting, mostly in support of putting in a roundabout.

"It's really a safety issue for the entire community, not just the residents," said Commissioner Carol Contrada. "We have a lot of visitors in that area, and we want to make sure that they feel safe and that the traffic is safe."

Contrada says safety was the main reason the commissioners agreed to move forward with the project.

Modern roundabouts are relatively new to northwest Ohio. The first in Lucas County appeared in 2009. The hope is that a roundabout in Sylvania Township will reduce accidents.

"Based on injury accidents that have occurred in the past, the roundabouts tend to decrease those types of accidents," said Lucas County Engineer Keith Earley.

Earley says Sylvania-Metamora and Mitchaw was the highest-ranked intersection for high-risk rural roads in the county, and 25th in the state.

One supporter said the million-dollar price tag is well worth the cost.

"A million dollars is worth saving a few lives, you know, potential lives that could be saved," said Casey Fuleky with the Olander Park System. "If it's gonna enhance the safety, then I think it's worth it."

The roundabout will offset the intersection about 45 feet, to affect neighbors less, and to take advantage of vacant land owned by 12 Lakes.

Construction is set to begin after school ends in 2014 and will take 45 days to complete.
