OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Oregon may be making a move that many other communities have already done: charging a fee for emergency ambulance service.

Residents in Oregon already pay a fire levy each year, but now city leaders want to charge a fee for basic and advanced life support services. The fee would be the responsibility of the patient's insurance company.

State law requires insurance companies to include emergency transport coverage in each policy they sell. The insurance companies would pay the fee to the City of Oregon, and the money would go into the general fund to help maintain and improve the fire and rescue services.

"We expect to garner between $150,000 and $200,000 a year," said Councilman Michael Sheehy. "Funds that we normally wouldn't have received, money that we just left on the table. Money that the insurance companies are collecting, but we could have collected it ourselves."

A council committee expressed its support for the new ambulance fee at a meeting Monday. The matter will be forwarded to the full council for a possible vote next Monday.
