Ridge Elementary family gathers to say goodbye

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

They called it a "Closing Open House."

Ridge Elementary School in Bowling Green opened it's doors in 1931 but is closing for good at the end of the school year.

On Sunday, former students, faculty and staff came to say farewell to the building.

As everybody roamed hallways and visited classrooms, memories of Ridge were exchanged.

Simply put, the building is old and would be too costly to upgrade with modern technology.

125 students will transfer to two other buildings.

"It's a small elementary. One classroom per grade level. So you're talking seven teachers in a community that's very close knit," said district superintendent Dr. Ann McVey.

Part of that community is Brad Gibson.

Five generations of Gibsons have attended Ridge, the latest being Brad's son Ty.

"It was part of growing up. Come here. Play on the playground, meet friends when first starting to grow up," said Brad.

"I don't really know what to say. It's just kind of amazing," said Ty.

The district hopes to sell the building to a start-up charter school.

If there's no buyer, it will be put up for auction.
