Suspect accused of assaulting police officer appears in court

Delano Stine Delano Stine
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A man accused in a violent attack that sent a veteran Toledo police officer to the emergency room was in front of a judge Monday morning.

Delano Stine, 18, was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court on the felonious assault on a police officer charge.

Police say they had enough evidence to also charge him with another felonious assault after a shooting at a house in the 800 block of Geneva the day before. The victim says around midnight Friday, she was doing dishes when she heard two gunshots. The rounds came through her window and she was grazed either by a bullet or glass. She told police her children had been involved in an altercation and the shooting was in retaliation.

"This is a person that needs to be off the street. I'm glad nobody was seriously hurt or killed, as far as what he did," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department.

Stine remains in the Lucas County Jail with bail now set at $250,000 for each charge.

No date was set for his next court appearance.

The second incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. outside the former Hotel Seagate, at the intersection of Summit and Monroe in downtown Toledo.

Off-duty officer Deb Hahn, who has been with the force for 27 years, was on work detail when she was approached by an 18-year-old woman claiming she had just been assaulted in a domestic violence dispute. As the officer was speaking to the woman, Stine ran up and assaulted the victim again. The officer stepped in and tried to break things up, when Stine began to assault her, as well.

Police say Stine pulled out a knife and cut the officer on her face and clothing. The officer had to be taken by ambulance to a local hospital for cuts on her chest and face that required stitches.

"The officer did sustain cuts, one a pretty decent cut to her face and clothing. The good news is, it looks like she's going to be fine," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan, of the Toledo Police Department.

According to police, Stine took off running down Monroe Street and jumped into the Maumee River in an attempt to get away. The original call came in that he had taken the officer's gun during the altercation, which prompted police from all over the area to swarm the downtown area.

Stine eventually came out of the water and was arrested behind the Owens Corning Fiberglass world headquarters building along the Maumee River.

Both the officer and Stine were taken to the same hospital. The officer was released after treatment and is recovering.
