Fans celebrate national "Free Comic Book Day"

Saturday was a day to celebrate fantastic heroes and evil villains.

It was national, "Free Comic Book Day."

Stores like JC's Comic Stop in south Toledo were packed.

The annual event has grown in stature from a few stores to some 2,000 worldwide.

Retailers say the turnout and scope of the event, which began in 2002, is giving them and the industry a chance to tout their success by giving away just over 4.5 million books.

"We see a lot of new faces. We hope that it translates to them coming back in through the doors and spending their hard earned dollars. I see a lot of my regular customers that come in. People like that help make this day happen," said JC's Comic Stop owner Jim Collins.

Jim also reminds folks that many comic books are the pop culture origins of heroes and villains that have become television and movie icons.
