Cherry Street Mission’s summer security plan

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Cherry Street Mission has stepped up security for the neighborhood.

Each year, as the weather gets nicer, crime tends to rise in the mission's neighborhood. But with the help of the Toledo Police, the Cherry Street Mission will be cracking down on crime this summer.

Dan Rogers, president and CEO of Cherry Street Mission, says they are always aware of their neighborhood and surroundings, and always discussing ways to stay safe.

"Presence is so critically important, you know, that we are all present and the police department is just simply an element of what needs to be present in the community," Rogers said.

According to Rogers, two common problems in the neighborhood are pedestrians being harassed and feeling unsafe, and what's called "smash and grab," where cars are broken into and ransacked quickly.

"There's ways that we can get on top of that," Rogers said. "One is certainly alerting the police to what's going on, which they really want to know and will be responsive to. But the other part of that is awareness and education."

One local businessman believes TPD did a great job last year keeping the crime down, and says he supports Cherry Street Mission's goal to step up security.

"I'm all for it," said Randall Ortman. "I think that it'd be just a good plus for the neighborhood."

Rogers says Cherry Street has to own the problems they face in the community, and answer those problems with good safety protocol, good education and awareness, but also good programming that helps people recover.
