Maumee parents concerned with children walking to school

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Maumee Schools is working with the city to make the paths students take to school safer. For most parents, their biggest concern is their children crossing the Anthony Wayne Trail.

"People that attend Gateway Middle School have to cross the Anthony Wayne Trail, which some of the intersections are kind of dangerous, so that's one thing that's been identified," said Joe Camp, Maumee Service Director.

Parents, school leaders, and city officials are working together to make it safer and easier for students to get to and from school. They are applying for two state grants: one for infrastructure needs, the other for educational programs.

"It's another avenue that we can get state funding for improvement projects," Camp said. "Not only on school property, but also in the right-of-way for the kids to have a safe pathway traveling to and from school."

Tran System, the consulting firm putting the plan together, is coming to conclusions on why residents are uncomfortable with their children walking to school. Their biggest concerns are distance and the speed and amount of traffic along major roads.

"More sidewalks, or just safer transitions at lights," suggested parent Lisa Lewis. "Maybe more stop signs, more crossing guards. Just curbs and signage, just so it's safer for our kids."
