Henry Co. mentor program needs volunteers

HENRY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local mentoring program for "at-risk" kids has been so successful, they're not looking to expand.

The Star Mentoring Program is run through the Henry County Court System. A "court-involved" child or teen is paired with an adult volunteer. The adult then serves as a stable and positive role model for the child.

Organizers now want to get more mentors involved. They say they have a waiting list of children with no mentors to pair them.

"We have really seen positive results come from the relationships that the adults have made with these children," said Katie Baden, court and program administrator. "They get a new friend who can give them new experiences and teach them positive activities that they can engage in, and probably things that they would have not learned otherwise."

The program is a commitment. Volunteers are required to spend eight hours per month with the child, and they're asked to be involved for at least a year.

Organizers say they're looking for people who can pass a background check and live in the area. Anyone interested in applying should email: family.court@henrycountyfamilycourt.com
