Henry Co. organization asking for levy

HENRY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Anorganization aimed at helping others is now asking for the community's help.

Voterswill decide next week whether or not to support a levy for the Henry CountyBoard of Developmental Disabilities.

Leaderswith the board say in the past year they've helped more than 400 people, andthey say if voters don't approve the levy, they may have to start making cutsto their services.

Jobs, housing, living skills, and family support are just some of the servicesoffered to those with disabilities at the HOPE Services building.

"Idon't know what I would have done without them," said Amber Arnette.

Arnetteis just one of the people who have seen firsthand what a little support can do.She says the people and resources at HOPE Services have completely helped herturn her life around.

"Iwas in a low place in my life," she said. "Giving me this job, helping me getout of my house and finding a place to live that was affordable to me, andhelping me pay my bills."

"Thesefolks tend to be the most vulnerable in the community," said HOPE SuperintendentMelinda Slusser. "To have support for them is critical for a good quality oflife."

That'swhy Slusser and others are hoping the community will support their levy. Shesays the levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $24 per year.

"Thinkabout if it was a loved one – your daughter, your child or sister – someone thatyou really cared about that needed help that wasn't getting it," Arnette said. "Thisis a way to help those people who can't do it on their own."
