MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Maumee Schools are working to make students' commute to school safer.

The district and the City of Maumee have been working with ODOT over the last year to improve non-vehicle transportation. They are focusing on bicycling and walking routes to the elementary schools.

"It's important so that we're ensuring that we have the safest routes to and from school that we can possibly have for our students in Maumee," said Nacy Sayre, or Maumee Schools.

A committee walked the routes the students traditionally take to school. Their goal was to identify improvements needed for sidewalks and streets.

"We're looking at things like crosswalks, sidewalks," Sayre said. "All the places kids need to get to and from schools, we're looking at street timers on the crossings."

The Safe Routes to Schools initiative is geared toward grade levels K-8. Not only will the program produce a safer way for students to travel, but the bottom line is to promote healthy living.

"Healthy lifestyles – walking, bicycling – encouraging that," Sayre said. "And the way to do that is to ensure your routes back to school are just as safe as they can be."

The district has composed a school travel plan. Now they need to get it approved.

"Once the plan becomes final, then we are eligible to apply for funding to help offset the cost to help improving crosswalks and sidewalks," Sayre explained.

There will be a public meeting held Thursday night at Gateway Middle School to get parents' input and to finalize the plan.
