UT faces millions of dollars in budget cuts

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Major decisions are about to be made at the University of Toledo, as $14 to $17 million worth of budget reductions will be made at the main and health science campuses.

"This is happening all over the country. Every state except two has reduced funding for higher education in the last several years," said UT President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs.

According to Jacobs, while some classes will be cut, no student will be denied access to the pursuit of a degree.

"We will reduce some sections that are under-subscribed, but we're not reducing any sections that are needed for degree completion," said Jacobs.

Linda Rouillard, UT Faculty Senate president, says before any academic cuts are considered, university administration should be trimmed. Jacobs argues UT is not top-heavy.

"My board worries about the thinness at the top. I myself have not had a raise for the entire time I've been at the University of Toledo," said Jacobs.

Despite a projected deficit of $30 million for the upcoming fiscal year, a tuition freeze remains in effect until the spring 2014 semester.

"Our commitment has been - and continues to be - spare the student, spare the student experience, spare the value of education," said Jacobs.

Jacobs says more details of the upcoming cuts will be known when a plan goes before the trustees in June.
