Swanton divided on school levy

SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A levy issue has residentsdivided in Swanton, where school leaders want to build a new Pre-K throughsixth grade building.

Some residents areprinting and handing out fliers opposing the levy.

The school district isasking voters to approve a 4.4 mill bond issue next Tuesday. The moneygenerated, paired with money from the state, would fund a brand new building, allowing the district to house all students in just two schools.

"Going from four buildingsto two buildings does stand to save the taxpayers money," said Jeff Schlade, with the district.

Catherine Ray believesthere is no pressing need at this time for a new building, so she and otherresidents are speaking out.

"I'm concerned that thislevy is less about the students, and more about the legacy the board ofeducation will be leaving," Ray said.

She thinks higher taxeswill only have a negative impact on the community.

"It's a tax burden thatshould not be laid on our generation, or the future generation," she added.

Schlade disagrees, sayingthe district wants to be able to provide excellent facilities.
