Low voter turnout expected for special Senate primary

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Primary day is Tuesday, but the race for the special U.S. Senate seat is not expected to draw many voters.

"When it comes down to it, because there's going to be such low voter turnout, a very small number of people can sway the results of the election," said Rob Rizzuto, political analyst and reporter for Masslive and The Republican.

Rizzuto says don't expect long linesTuesday at the polls.

"It's off-season. It's not when people are in their political mode, and for us right now, it's coming off the heels of an exhausting and the most expensive United States Senate race in history," Rizzuto said.

Secretary of State William Galvin says only one in five voters is expected to cast a ballot, with 550,000 expected to vote in the Democratic primary. That's 120,000 less than the 2009 special primary.

Only around 200,000 are expected to vote Republican.

"The Brown, Warren race really sucked the political life out of Massachusetts," Rizzuto said.

But that hasn't stopped the candidates from criss-crossing the state in the last 72 hours, heating up the campaign trail with tactics learned from past Democratic elections.

"It's what got Deval Patrick elected in 2006. It's what's been emulated on the national level with Barack Obama's election since then," Rizzuto said, "taking the idea of going door-to-door, making an actual connection with the viewers with the hopes and knowledge that a personal connection means more than a phone call, a mailer, an email that gets forwarded from somebody, making that personal connection."

Democratic reps. Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch will be facing off Tuesday as well as Republicans Michael Sullivan, Daniel Winslow and Gabriel Gomez.

CBS 3 will have all the latest numbers on CBS 3 Springfield news at 11 p.m. Tuesday and on the web at www.cbs3springfield.com.
