MI library could close if voters don't support levy

The Tecumseh Public Library could close for good if voters don't support an upcoming levy. The Tecumseh Public Library could close for good if voters don't support an upcoming levy.
TECUMSEH, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Voters in Tecumseh, MI will soon have to choose between supporting a levy or possibly losing their library completely.

It's not just about books anymore. Computers, magazines and technology classes are all part of the Tecumseh Public Library.

"I come here every day. I got on the Internet. I'm in the middle of reading a book," said resident Corky Duke.

If voters don't renew a levy, people like Duke will have to find somewhere else to go.

"The possibility that we could close is certainly there, and it's certainly real," said Gayle Hazelbaker, director of the Tecumseh Library.

To keep the library operating as is, voters will have to renew a 1.15 mill levy in place right now. Then to continue growing as a library, voters will have to approve an additional .2 mill levy.

"There is no funding that's just going to be there to pick it back up if this doesn't get picked up by the voters," said Anne Walker, chairwoman of the Ballot Question Committee.

The renewal levy would cost the owner of a home worth $100,000 less than $5 per month. The additional levy would cost that same homeowner about 80 cents a month on top of the $5.

"It's so little that we're asking to keep such a great resource to people in the community," said Walker.

It's a resource used by many.

"As people have suffered in the community due to the economy, we've seen a dramatic increase in usage," said Hazelbaker.

It's also a resource people seem willing to support.

"I think they probably would [vote for the levy]. I would vote for it because I still think it's an important part of society," said Duke.
