Golfers tee-off for Toledo homeless

OTTAWA LAKE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Homeless families across the Toledo area are being turned away from shelters due to a lack of space.

There is an increased number of people who need assistance, but space limitations are preventing them from getting help.

According to Elizabeth Tore, Executive Director of Family Promise of Greater Toledo, "Metropolitan Toledo is ranked first in the nation in terms of concentrated poverty."

In a statement, Tore said, "As a community, we must provide an answer."

Family Promise of Greater Toledo is working to solve that problem with a golf marathon.

Beginning Monday morning, golfers will tee off for the "100 Hole Golf Marathon." The competition takes place at the Whiteford Valley Golf Club, 7980 Beck Road, Ottawa Lake, Michigan.

Proceeds from the benefit will go towards a new facility for the homeless in south Toledo.

Each golfer's target goal was to raise $2,500 through sponsorships. To inspire golfers to raise more money, a grand prize valued at $1,000 will be awarded to the top overall fundraiser.

Golfers will take to the green beginning at 6 a.m.
