Health department collects unwanted prescription drugs

People all over northwest Ohio are realizing how important it is to properly get rid of unused prescription medication.

All over the country Saturday, events were held where people could drop off unwanted or un-needed drugs.

It was all part of the national "drug take-back" initiative.

In Toledo, the event was held at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department.

Organizers say this is a good way to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands.

"We just want to get anything, not necessarily just dangerous medication, but anything in general that can harm animals and people and things like that. Get those kind of off the streets," said Anthony Pasquale of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department.

After the drop off, the medications will be taken to the Drug Enforcement Administration to be destroyed.

According to the Department of Justice, in 5 previous Take-Back events more than 2 million pounds of prescription medications were removed from circulation nationally.
