Police Athletic League offered building tour

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There were rumors floating around that the Toledo Police Athletic League (PAL) building had been picked through by vandals and was in bad condition.

Those rumors were debunked this afternoon, when city leaders and the PAL director opened the building for a tour.

During the tour, it was noted that there was no damage. Because of that, the land swap of the building between the city and Toledo Public Schools is expected to pass on Tuesday.

"I didn't know what to expect, but the building is in great shape," said Councilman Mike Craig. "I can see where some work needs to be done…but really, there's not a lot of work that needs done."

The PAL has been in the gymnasium of the old Leverette Junior High since 2008, but since November of last year, the program has been at the old Riverside Hospital Complex.

On Tuesday, council will see an ordinance that would secure $250,000 from two city funds – the Capital Improvements and the Parkland Replacement funds – to allow for water, gas and electric to be supplied to the building. Before the money is voted on, the land swap needs to pass.

TPS has approved their end of the deal, now it's just up to city council to do the same. After the tour, city officials believe votes will be in their favor.

"Councilman Craig came out here, he saw the condition of the building, and we think we will be able to get this ordinance passed," said Deputy Mayor Steve Herwat.

"I don't think it was ever a question of whether we fund PAL, it was a question of how," Craig said. "This is going to be a good investment for the city."
