Durant says he is up to challenge for TPS

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools officially has an interim superintendent on board, ready to take over for Dr. Jerome Pecko.

Romules Durant has a one-year contract to serve as interim superintendent, and says he's ready to start August 1. The contract outlines several expectations the board has for Durant, including raising graduation rates.

"I'm always up to all challenges," Durant said. "I think it's one of sitting down with the team, taking a look at the goals…and strategically aligning plans that are impacting those goals."

Durant says success is all about planning and surrounding yourself with people who want to move in the same direction as you.

The district has agreed to pay Durant a $140,000 salary. In return, they would like to see an improvement in the district's communication with the public, a boost in academic performance, and higher graduation rates. The latter, Durant says, can be accomplished by getting everyone on the same page.

"Generating a plan strategically that the staff is aware of, as well as the community," he said. "But most importantly, the students. Because when the students own the plan, own the mission and own the vision, then you truly have them. Then they have internalized the expectation of being a college/career-ready graduate."
