Toledo youth hold anti-violence rally

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Holding up signs that read "Grades over Guns" and "Be the first to make a change," students from all over Toledo participated in an anti-violence rally Thursday.

Dozens of students gathered at Mulberry and Moore Street to share their message of peace.

"We have several youth that are doing the right things, that are doing positive things in the community," said Rosa Linda Contreraz Harris, of the Toledo Youth Commission. "This is their time to shine and say those things."

They chanted, cheered and marched. They held up signs and hoped Toledoans will learn to drop the gun and act as a community.

"It's important that all youth work together to make sure that we keep these raids down," Harris said.

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell shared a message of his own.

"I do appreciate you, you are our future," he said to the students. "This is why we are doing this walk, because we think it's important, because if we're not taking care of you, and if you're not taking care of yourself, we're not going to have a vibrant city in the future."

The rally was organized by the mayor's Coalition for Hope and the Department of Youth Services.
