TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Police Department has more than 550 officers to protect Toledo residents, but many also devote time to programs designed to keep Toledo youth out of trouble.

"The police officers basically give you an eye-opener," said Kimbrance Slay, a STRIVE participant. "They put things in a different perspective than you would actually think about it."

Officer Flo Wormley started the STRIVE program 15 years ago, after an idea that came from her own son. Officers on the Police Probation Team (PPT) help kids that may be headed down the wrong path, and redirect them toward success.

"Can you imagine really having your own, personal police officer to come to, to talk to, to help you make some decisions, to redirect you, to talk about your education?" Officer Wormley said.

School resource officers refer kids who have committed an arrestable offense to the PPT and STRIVE. Students work with officers to keep their records clean. Officers have set up basketball teams and games, served as mentors, advocates and tutors, and helped prepare students for their OGTs.

"If I would have not been put in PPT program, then I would have all this stuff on my record," said Cheyenne Goldsmith. "I would have probably got arrested yesterday."

Officer Wormley says the program has changed lives, including hers.

"The bonds that I make with some of these young people that are now grown, that I'm dealing with their kids, is extraordinary," she said.
