Officials break ground for new Sylvania fire station

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sylvania Township has broken ground for a new fire station.

The original Fire Station 1, which was built in 1930 on Monroe Street, was torn down earlier this month. The new fire station will be built at the same location with major upgrades.

Firefighters and city leaders were on hand to kick off construction of the modern, $1.9 million facility, which will be just under 9,000 square feet with room for expansion.

"Our station will have three bays. We'll have capacity for 10 firefighters. We'll house five firefighters there at first, but as I said, we will have expansion in mind in the future. So we'll be able to have as many as 10 firefighters there, which will give us a truck, an engine, a transport unit and also a chief," said Jeff Kowalski, Sylvania Township fire chief.

Construction is expected to be complete by Nov. 1.
