Commission recommends increasing Council, mayor salaries

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo City Council is reviewing recommendations to increase the salaries of future mayors and members of council, a review which happens every four years.

The seven members appointed to the Salary Review Commission recommend raising the mayor's salary from $122,400 per year to $136,000 per year, reversing a decrease approved four years ago. Council members' pay would increase from $27,500 per year to $32,500 per year.

If approved, the new salaries would go into effect during the next terms for those offices.

"We're not voting to give ourselves anything. Those who chose to run for re-election or those who choose to run and are elected the next cycle, would benefit from any increase that's there," said Councilman Rob Ludeman.

"I think we need to weigh the time and the attention that members of Council devote to the job, even though it's considered a part-time job," said Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson.

A vote by City Council is likely April 30. If approved, the new salaries for mayor and the at-large Council seats would apply in 2014. For the district Council seats, the increases would apply in 2016.
