Sylvania School District opposes Kasich budget provision

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Sylvania School District is one of many opposing a provision in Gov. John Kasich's education budget, due to concerning language.

The Sylvania Board of Education passed a resolution Monday night, opposing the expansion of vouchers, which is language currently in the governor's proposed budget. The concern is it would take away $5,700 from the district, allowing kindergarteners to use those funds for a private education. In the second year of the bill, it would allow first-graders that opportunity, taking tax dollars away from public schools and putting them into the hands of private education.

"The general theme that the board of education - in passing the resolution last night - was this idea that it's inappropriate for taxpayer dollars to be diverted from public school education, to allow students to use that money for private school education," said Dr. Brad Rieger, superintendent of Sylvania schools.

Rieger believes private education is a great experience for children and the district supports parents being able to choose that option, but officials feel it is inappropriate to use taxpayer money.
