TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local woman has been watching the news from Boston with great interest as she prepares for her first marathon this weekend.

Robin Mower will be running the Glass City Marathon, using Boston runners for inspiration. Mower, however, is likely to be an inspiration to others.

Mower has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Running a marathon is one more thing she can cross off her bucket list, as well as a way of proving that she is living.

"She's a wonderful woman," said Mower's husband John. "She's an inspiration to a lot of people, including me, and I love her to death. I hope that she stays as positive as she has been."

ALS is a fatal neurological disease. Mower was diagnosed in 2009, as she was training for the Glass City Marathon. Now she will finally get the chance to run it.

"I'm fulfilling my dream, I've always wanted," Mower said. "And I'm showing other ALS patients that they can live, and not fear dying."

Mower can't walk or run, so she will be partaking in the marathon in a stroller, with help from another runner. They tested it out Monday.

"To help anybody fulfill their dream – I just think that would be an honor to be a part of," said Jessica Meeker. "I'm really happy to meet her…She's just a beautiful person, so it makes me even happier that I am here doing this."

Mower says she'll run with a special purpose now.

"After the Boston Marathon, I was upset about it," she said. "I want to run and cross that line for the many others who couldn't."
