Former Clay athletic trainer appears in court on sexual battery charges

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Clay High School's former athletic trainer appeared in court Monday morning, after being charged with two counts of sexual battery.

Police Chief Mike Navarre says Melinda Rober, 35, admitted to having sex with at least two students under the age of 18 during her 10-year career at the school.

"This is a very complex investigation. It's very possible other victims may come forward," said Navarre.

Oregon School Board President PJ Kapfhammer says he was told Rober was sending naked pictures of herself to students. He claims he notified Clay High School Principal Jeff Thompson, but nothing was done.

"I personally came forward to advise the school principal and told him I heard some rumors a couple months ago - nothing as bad as I'm hearing now. I asked him to look into it and we dropped the ball," said Kapfhammer.

After being questioned, Rober resigned from her position as athletic trainer Friday. Her attorney, Steven Hartman, says she is cooperating with the investigation "so she can get on with her life."

Parents say they are disgusted.

"It's a shame that it happened in our school - or any school," said Mark Keller. "What other things are going on that we don't know about possibly, if this is going on?"

Sue Rasar's son is a sophomore at Clay High School.

"It just boggles my mind why someone would do it. I mean, whether male or female," said Rasar.

Superintendent Mike Zalar said he did not want to comment on the situation until the investigation was complete, but said he is outraged about what has happened.

Rober was in court Monday for her arraignment, where the preliminary hearing was waived. Her bond remains at $20,000. The case will be presented to the Lucas County grand jury at a later date.
