Athletic trainer at Clay HS arrested on sexual battery charges

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An Oregon City Schools athletic trainer is facing serious sex charges in connection with students.

35 year-old Mindy Rober was charged with 2 counts of sexual battery, a felony of the third-degree.

According to Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre, Rober is accused of sexual conduct with two Clay High School students, both under the age of 18.

Chief Navarre says the allegations date back eighteen months.

That's when Rober allegedly had sex with the two students.

"This is a very complex investigation. It's very possible other victims may come forward," said Chief Navarre.

Rober worked at the school for more than 10 years as an employee of ProMedica, which has contracts with the school district to provide athletic training.

She resigned from her position immediately on Friday.

It's not clear at this time where the incidents took place. The victims went to school administrators, who then informed police.

Rober was interviewed in her home on Friday and later turned herself in to the police.

Chief Navarre says Rober was "very cooperative" when questioned by police. He also says that Ms. Rober, "made it very easy for us to come to the conclusion that we did."

Oregon School Board President PJ Kapfhammer says another student has come forward with similar allegations and expects others will too.

"I don't even want to begin to think. It's just not real good. There's an investigation. I can't go much deeper than that. I just know we're just scratching the surface of what we're figuring out," said Mr. Kapfhammer.

Kapfhammer says he heard Rober was sending naked pictures of herself to students.

"I personally came forward to advise the high school principal and told him I heard some rumors a couple months ago. Nothing as bad as hearing now. I asked him to look into it and he dropped the ball," said Mr. Rober.

District Superintendent Michael Zalar told Toledo News Now by phone that principal Jeff Thompson is out of town.

"When credible information came out with the names of students, the matter was immediately handed over to police and resolved in 24 hours," added Mr. Zalar.

Rober is free after posting $20,000 bond.

Dr. Michael Zalar, Superintendent of Oregon City Schools, released a statement on Saturday evening.

Text of Superintendent Zalar's statement:

"The Oregon Board of Education is aware that a police investigation is currently in progress related to inappropriate sexual relations between an athletic trainer and several students. Information was reported to school officials who, upon receiving the information, immediately contacted the Oregon Police Department. Athletic training services for the district are contracted through a local hospital. The athletic trainer is not an employee of the district. The matter continues to be under investigation by the Oregon Police Department."

Rober's husband spoke exclusively with WTOL 11, saying his wife left town after posting bond. He said he is shocked by the allegations, and she admitted to him that she had relationships with students.

A statement from ProMedica reads, "Mindy Rober is no longer an employee at ProMedica. We are cooperating fully with local authorities. Our athletic training program has an outstanding history and reputation and we, in no way, were aware of or condone any inappropriate behavior."

Rober is expected to be arraigned in Oregon Municipal Court on Monday.
