Toledo SWAT unit's training keeps them ready for anything

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Like everyone else, members of law enforcement have been glued to the news coverage coming out of Boston this week.

Toledo News Now spoke with Lieutenant Giesige of the Toledo Police Department's SWAT unit for his reaction to the events in Boston.

He says these types of scenarios can happen anywhere, at anytime, and members of SWAT teams need to rely on their training.

He says the training that the TPD SWAT unit receives is not much different than the training of the officers in Boston.

The TPD SWAT unit, primarily, is called in for barricaded suspect or hostage situations. Recently the SWAT team added a new bomb technician to their ranks to diversify their abilities.

Lt. Giesige says the most important way to prepare for any situation is training alongside other departments and covering, in training, every plausible scenario that could come up, because in chaotic situations officers are forced to fully rely on that training.

"Most police officers know what to do in situations like this. I think your training just comes into effect. As long as you've got good leadership at the scene, they know how to control the scene, and everybody does their job, you can get the mission accomplished," he said.

Lt. Giesige wanted to ensure area residents that there are members of the SWAT unit in the field every day, ready to act at a moment's notice to ensure the public's safety so nobody has to live in fear.
