Defiance looks at levy to save public safety jobs

DEFIANCE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Defiance city leaders say they are looking at a levy as a possible way to bring more money in for the public safety departments.

The city is already operating with a smaller crew than they've had in years past, and leaders say if more money isn't brought in, cuts at the fire department will only continue.

"We've had numerous issues with an eroding tax base," said City Administrator Jeff Leonard. "We're losing money…We do have to make adjustments, and we will make adjustments."

Leonard says more than half of the city's general fund goes to the public safety department, so adjustments could be made there, but the assistant fire chief says they've lost six firefighters through attrition recently. Those positions have not been filled.

City leaders are leaving the topic open for discussion, but many residents are not sure if they'd support higher taxes.

The levy is still in the very early stages, and officials say they will look for public input before making any decisions.
