TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Chicken and pizza are fan favorites among those of us dining out, but what's happening while our menu picks are under preparation? Is our food stored on the floor before it reaches our plate? Is produce washed prior to handling?

There are seven violations to count at Vito's Pizza and Subs on North Reynolds Road in west Toledo. There is no hot water coming out of the sink near the cash register, weeks-old macaroni and cheese had to be tossed out, inconsistent date marking was found on many frozen food items, like wings, plus pans of dough and a box of paper plates were found stored on the floor in the cooler.

That is definitely not the case at Caper's Pizza Bar on Byrne Road in south Toledo. Inspectors noted gloves are in use, hair is restrained, and food is being stored properly. Overall, the facility is clean and well-maintained.

At the Kentucky Fried Chicken on West Bancroft in west Toledo, an employee was wearing latex gloves while preparing potato wedges, but then accepted a cash payment and returned to the food, never changing gloves. Not doing so could easily lead to contaminated food. The potato wedges were ultimately thrown in the garbage.

Flies are buzzing at Biggby Coffee on Markway Road in west Toledo. Of its seven violations, inspectors noted damaged floor tiling, another case of inconsistent date marking, and a box of coffee cups stored on the floor.

At the Elephant Bar Restaurant on Monroe Street in west Toledo, inspectors say deep cleaning is needed inside the dish machine. They also found build-up forming on the walls. Inspectors suggest to regularly clean all surfaces, including floors, walls and ceilings, to prevent the growth of dirt and grime.

Cleaning is also needed at El Nuevo Vallarta on West Central Avenue in west Toledo. During inspection, grease puddles were seen on the floor beneath the cookline, build-up was found inside the ice machine, and a case of eggs were stored on the floor of the walk-in cooler.
