Fishermen use caution during dangerous river conditions

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Maumee River is now higher than it has been all year. This comes at the peak time of year for the walleye run, raising concerns for fishermen.

The water is high and moving at a fast pace, causing dangerous conditions for anyone wanting to fish. Still, the danger didn't stop some fishermen from casting out.

Paul Kidd geared up in waterproof boots and a weighted suit, hoping to catch some walleye on the Maumee River.

"I just love being outside fishing. The water its kind of chilly out, but I just love being outside," said Kidd.

The love for the sport brought him and a handful of other fishermen out on the banks. However, consistent rainfall has caused the river to rise approximately a foot above sea level.

State wild life officer Eric VonAlmen says the high levels cause potential hazards for bank and boat fishing.

"I strongly consider wearing a belt to help keep the water out of you weighters if you should fall in," said VonAlmen.

Frigid temperatures, high winds and rising water are dangerous conditions for even the most experienced fisherman, like Sam Berry.

"If you don't put a stick out there and figure out where your feet are going, you could end up over your head. Once you get real heavy in your weight suit, you're real heavy, like a sinker," said Berry.

Because of the river's dangers, most fishers stayed on the banks. Those in boats didn't go out too far, making sure they stayed safe.

"It's 100 percent safety. You don't want to get out too far where water from boaters overtakes you and then you drown," said Kidd.

High waters caused many of the fishermen to walk away without catching a single fish, but they say because they used proper safety and a little common sense, they'll be able to do it all again this weekend.
