Head start program needs funding

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The future of the Toledo-Lucas County Head Start program is currently up in the air.

The grant money from the Economic Opportunity Planning Association (EOPA) that funds the program runs out in June. Both EOPA and Toledo Public Schools applied for a grant to run the program next year, but neither group met requirements for the grant.

Leaders from both organizations said they had a lot of strengths, but didn't give enough information in areas such as how to increase family engagement or provide properly trained employees.

EOPA officials say they plan to re-apply, and say they have several advantages over an outside company.

"Our employees live with the people whom we serve, so there's a rapport there," said Rev. Donald Perryman, board chair of EOPA.

The TPS board now has to decide if they want to re-apply.
