TPS gets 8 F's, one D in dry run of new state report card system

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The state is rolling out a brand new grading system to measure the performance of schools and school districts. The old system used a scale that rated schools in categories, like "excellent" or "academic emergency." The new system is expected to be easier to understand and more thorough, ranking in letter grades.

The new system will use an A through F letter grade system, similar to what kids get on their report cards. State achievement tests, graduation rates, and year-to-year improvement will be some of the major factors reviewed by the state.

Toledo Public Schools officials say if the new system would have been in place last year, they would have received mixed results. They say some schools would have received A's, but others would have received F's.

Under the new system, the district as a whole received D's and F's last year. Still, officials say they have been working hard to make changes and are very optimistic about progress they are seeing so far.

"We believe strongly - in terms of the transformation plan the district has started - we believe we're seeing evidence it's working, and we're hopeful as we begin this round of testing, that we're going to see improved results," said Jim Gault, Chief Academic Officer for TPS.

Testing begins April 23.

Schools will get their first letter grades in nine different categories this August. Overall school and district grades will not be released until August 2015.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
