Murfreesboro teacher arrested on sex charges

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A Murfreesboro City Schools teacher has been arrested on Lawrence County warrants concerning sex crimes against minors.

Lawrence County deputies and Murfreesboro police arrested Lavar Jernigan, 35, at a Murfreesboro school Thursday morning and charged him with solicitation of a minor and sexual exploitation of a minor. Jernigan taught band at three Murfreesboro schools.

Lawrence County authorities transported Jernigan back to Lawrence County for booking after being interviewed jointly by Lawrence County and Murfreesboro officials.

Murfreesboro police will continue the investigation, and Jernigan may face additional charges in Rutherford County.

School officials said they sent a letter home to explain the situation to parents.

"The purpose of the letter is to just to let parents know what happened and it's one of our teachers and we are taking this very seriously," said MCS communications director Lisa Trail. "We are cooperating with the Murfreesboro police department. We don't believe this has anything to do with our district. We just want to be proactive in communicating with our parents."
