Mud Hens, downtown businesses prepare for Opening Day

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Mud Hens are getting ready to celebrate Opening Day this Thursday, but rain in the forecast could put a damper on plans.

Rain or shine, downtown will be filled with thousands of people Thursday afternoon to see the Mud Hens. And the team and local businesses are prepared.

"In my opinion, the best day to be a Toledoan all year long," said Jim Mettler, owner of Ye Olde Cock n' Bull. "We're really excited for Opening Day this year, glad to see the boys back in town…If we have bad weather and there's heavy rain, and it keeps people away from downtown, that will be kind of a sad thing for everyone…But we'll keep our fingers crossed."

Mettler has ordered extra inventory and says there will be live entertainment all day long.

It's the same at Ye Olde Durty Bird, according to manager Drew Crane. Tents, extra inventory, and specials await fans, rain or shine.

"We'll have a lot of extra inventory if it is a washout, but we'll get rid of it eventually," Crane said. "We have a lot of volunteers and a lot of staff. If we have to send some people home, we'll send some people home and go from there."

Mud Hens officials say gates will open no matter what for their Opening Day festivities, as scheduled at 3 p.m., and that they will never cancel a game before the game starts.
