License plate tax could bring business to Seneca County

SENECA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A license plate tax could help with road safety and economic development in Seneca County, and several residents are supporting the commissioner who proposed it.

Seneca County Commissioner Fred Zoeller's goal is to bring more jobs to the area.

"I hate additional taxes," Zoeller said. "I think the government overtaxes us, but this is something that, you know, we have to invest in ourselves, and invest in our future. I think it will position Seneca County, from an infrastructure standpoint, at least 25 years down the road."

Last week, Zoeller proposed a $5 license plate tax that would generate about $200,000 a year. The money would strictly be used for road improvements.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz supports the tax, and says he believes safety is the main issue.

"It seems like every week there's another accident on 53, and it's time that we leverage the state to try and get 53 improved into at least a ‘Super 2,' if not a 4-lane highway," Montz said. "It's the perfect time. Turnpike money will be available soon. If we do not do it now, it's never going to happen."

One of the local business owners at the meeting agrees.

"Anything we can do to improve the infrastructure of this area, the better off the people, and the better off the business climate's going to be," said Tom Hay.
