Lucas County explores new jail options

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lucas County Commissioners approved putting out a Request for Proposals on Tuesday, seeking a consultant to help the county with a jail feasibility study.

One option to be considered is using a building at the state prison in North Toledo which is no longer being used. The study will also take a look at the possibility of putting courtrooms in a new jail, to maximize partnership opportunities with the City of Toledo and other communities.

While it's not known at this time how much a new jail would cost, county leaders say it's needed to replace the current jail.

"All the problems, it's something different every day. It's another pipe breaking or leaking, or an elevator breaking down," said Sheriff John Tharp.

"It is obsolete," added Commissioner Carol Contrada. "It is deteriorating and it requires a significant number of capital improvements."

The commissioners expect to have the study completed and a decision made about how the jail project will proceed by October 1.
