American Veterans posts admit misuse of funds

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

American Veterans' posts in Findlay and Fostoria have admitted they misused funds from instant bingo.

Both posts received a grade of ‘D' in a recent investigation by Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine.

Ohio law requires at least 25 percent of instant bingo funds to go to job placement programs for veterans.

"They weren't filling the charitable purpose of providing career training to veterans the centers were just not capable of doing so because they were so poorly maintained," said Dan Tierey, a spokesperson for the Attorney General's office.

Officials say the Findlay post received $147,000 to fund a career center, while the post in Fostoria got $59,000. Despite the funding, officials say there are only four computers serving 45 veterans enrolled in the career program at the Findlay post.

Tierey says the posts have admitted their wrong-doing, and pledge to follow the law moving forward.

"They are going to follow Ohio charitable law moving forward and give the charitable proceeds as directed by the agreement," said Tierey.
