TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Toledo Public School Board of Education has entered negotiations with Dr. Romules Durant to select him as interim superintendent.

Durant is currently assistant superintendent for TPS, as well as the only person within TPS to apply for the job.

After Monday's special meeting, board members went into executive session, interviewing the final two candidates: Durant and Douglas Heuer, current superintendent of Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools. It only took the board a little over two hours to announce Durant as their candidate.

"We're recognizing that we have someone among us, who we feel has abilities," said Brenda Hill, TPS School Board president.

Durant says he is ready to tackle the future.

"Toledo has been very good to me, in allowing me the opportunity, in regard to youths, education, as well as, you know, even athletics and playing football. And then more importantly, for me to be able to reinvest what's in the district to provide the same things that have been afforded to me," said Durant.

The district says the dedication and commitment to students Durant displayed put him ahead of other candidates. The board says his age is just a number.

"Most people who do things and are famous, like Martin Luther King, or anyone, when you look, they started in their 30s and 40s, so leadership comes at an early age. Sometimes people are born with leadership," explained Hill.

Durant says he is excited about the decision.

"We have a road ahead of us, and to be able to lead and charge, as well as develop a lot of energy I have within myself that's already here at the board. I'm just very excited to begin to look at the vision of Toledo Public Schools," said Durant.

The board has now entered into contract negotiations with Durant and hopes to make it official by the next scheduled meeting.
