This late weekend system will be just the start to a cooler pattern next week; that will bring our coolest temperatures of the season so far.

(Toledo News Now) -

As the weather's warming up, more people and more pets are heading outdoors, and that's heating up the chances of people being bitten by a dog.

Orlando Cuevas, owner and head trainer at the Sit Means Sit dog training center, says preventing a bite starts with someone taking a stand.

"If you encounter a dog that's coming at you to bite…you never want to turn your back to them," he said. "You want to put your hands in the air to make yourself look really big, yell and scream to get them to turn around, get them to stop. You do have some dogs that will still come at you for the bite. That's when you want to utilize something, whether it's a hat, a coat, a shirt, a briefcase, a purse, anything to put between you and the dog to prevent the dog getting close to you."

Sit Means Sit holds training sessions for local postal carriers.

"Our goal with postal carriers - we're teaching them not only to be able to read the dogs, but when they are put in a situation where the dog's ready to bite, what they can do to prevent it by using their equipment they carry," Cuevas explained. "If they can engage in tug with the bag, as long as the bag's in the dog's mouth, then none of their body parts are."

Cuevas says it's never too early for people to learn the basics of interacting with dogs.

"We even do dog safety classes for little kids, to teach them the proper way to approach a dog, how to pet…to help educate them as well."
