FOSTORIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Fostoria man has donated $2,500 to the police department to get a new dog, after one of their K-9s was put to sleep earlier this week.

Bill Frankart is the owner of Enviro Tire Recycling, a retired Wood County Sheriff's deputy, and life-long Fostoria resident. Earlier this week, he learned the Fostoria Police Department's German Shepherd, Ninja, lost his fight with cancer.

"I'm pretty much an animal lover, and I know we have a bunch of good, young officers in Fostoria, and I just want to help them out with another tool to do their job," Frankart said.

Officer Brandon Bell works with the only K-9 left in the unit.

"It's invaluable for the City of Fostoria," Bell said. "Not only our department, but the community, in general. It's an invaluable tool that helps us fight crime in the city and the surrounding area."

Because of Frankart's past in law enforcement, he understands and recognizes the need for K-9s.

"[They're] a lot better at smelling, and the police will be able to make more arrests and stop some of these guys from peddling drugs," he said.

Although his $2,500 donation will get the ball rolling, a new K-9 can cost up to $12,000. Frankart hopes his donation is not the last, and would like to see other citizens and businesses donate, as they have in the past.

The department is grateful, and excited to add a new member to their unit.
