School district to pay off debt, lower taxes for residents

SWANTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents in one local community will start to see lower taxes next year.

Swanton residents could not be happier to hear the news.

"Anything that will save money, I'm all for it," said resident Danila Harsh.

They have the Swanton Board of Education to thank.

"We're in the process of saving taxpayers money by refunding and paying down our debt," explained Joyce Kinsman, treasurer of the Swanton Board of Education.

Kinsman has been with the district for about a year. She says when she saw they had the ability to pay off some debt, she knew they had to do it.

"It's just part of being a good steward of taxpayer dollars, that we are looking at our operations and trying to save money where we can," said Kinsman.

Overall taxes will be reduced by 1.8 mill by the year 2025, but residents will start to see some of the reductions kick in next January.

Swanton school officials are very optimistic about the plan. They say not only will it save taxpayers money, but it could lead to even more changes inside the schools.

District officials say the middle school is in poor condition and they want to build a brand new school for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. However, in order to do that, they will need voters to approve a levy on the May ballot.

Kinsman hopes this tax reduction will help make the upcoming levy look more attractive to voters.

"The ballot language will say '4.4 mill,' but when it gets approved and goes through, actually, it will feel like a 2.6 mill levy," said Kinsman.

Residents say it is something they will keep in mind when heading to the polls.
