BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One man is dead after an overnight fire in a Bowling Green apartment. It happened in the 100 block of Main Street in an apartment above a business.

Shortly after 1 a.m., police received a call from apartment residents saying they smelled smoke. When crews arrived, they found the source to be Unit E, which is separate from other units inside the building. The fire was contained to a single room in the apartment.

"Crews entered that apartment, extinguished the fire, and found one individual who was transported to Wood County Hospital and was pronounced dead there," said BG Fire Chief Stephen Meredith.

Marshall Drake, 52, of Bowling Green, was found unresponsive in his bedroom. Fire department paramedics tried CPR, but Drake did not survive.

The businesses below the apartment suffered minor water damage, but were still able to open today.

Although damage from the fire was minimal, the fact that a life was lost is sobering to neighbors.

"It's sad," said Nicole Gribbin, Drake's neighbor. "He was a really nice guy...Once we figured out it was coming from his unit, we were hoping he was at work, like he usually is, but that wasn't the case."

The state fire marshal was called to assist. The cause of Drake's death, as well as the fire, are still under investigation.
